In B16.5 / 2003 there are 2 charts relating to flanges. One is a flange size on pg 71 and the other is a flange fitting size shown on 73. Regarding flange thickness the numbers are different for flanges under 3" and under and only in 150# class.

There is a discrepancy here at work between two people who've been in the valve biz over 20 years so this may not be an easy answer based on how vague ASME is.

We are measuring without the raised face which we all agree is correct procedure.

Here are the numbers in dispute:

2" 1503 Flange Fitting thickness = 14.3mm
2" 1503 Flange thickness = 17.5mm

3" 1503 Flange Fitting thickness = 17.5
3" 1503 Flange thickness = 22.3

The difference doesn't effect face to face.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this order is on rush.

thx,
Nick

You'll find your answer in AMSE B16.34, Valves-Flanges, Threaded and Welding End.

Refer to para. 6.2.2

6.2.2 Flanged Ends. Flanged ends shall be prepared with flange facing, nut-bearing surfaces, outside diameter, thickness, and drilling in accordance with ASME B16.5 requirements for
(a) flanged fittings for Class 150 and 300 valves
(b) flanges for Class 600 and higher values

Also in B16.5, refer to the notes shown for the thickness dimensions and it will explain why the thickness is different for loose flanges than for flanged fittings.

Typically, when buying valves, start with the Valve Standards and go from there.
