WE are designing a heat shield for our flare for an offshore application. This heat sheild is located at the base of the flare tip to protect the stack structure. We have used flare sim to calculate the heat load and temperature and submitted to the heat shield vendor (we have used standard parameters into Flaresim for emissivity ect and checked wind speed). I am curious if flaresim is very accurate very close to the flare. This is in part due to our flare tip vendor stating the heat load at the base would not be as high as that calculated in flare sim.

What is the basis for comparison, i.e. which methods and conditions/assumptions have been used by your company and by the flare vendor? Obviously there must be a difference somewhere if different results were obtained.

You are talking about an offshore structure so I'd try to be very conservative - unless proven otherwise.
