Greetings Structural Gods

I generally use the SANS codes when designing structural steel and venture to other codes such as the AISC for the BS codes when dealing with aspects not covered in SANS (eg angles subjected to bending).

Section F11 of the AISC deals with rectangular bars, does the code count flat bar as a rectangular bar also?

I would say not. A truly flat bar isn't really prone to lateral torsional bucking like a generalized rectangular bar may be. A true flat bar, used predominately in weak axis flexure, would have a bending capacity of [phi_b x Zx x Fy] I would think.

I think that BOTH Section F11 applies and that Koot is correct. It seems that Section F11 addresses everthing.

Isn't a flat bar and a rectangular bar the same thing?

Hi Guys

Thanks for the responses.

I think that JoelTXCive is correct. It does seem logical, in addition I've seen a lifting lug design code which is based on section F11 from the AISC.

When I hear "flat bar", I think of a bar member oriented such that it's bending about its weak axis (bar on the flat). Perhaps that assumtion was incorrect here. I agree with your assessment on the applicability of F11. I'd originally assumed that F11 was probably the strong axis / LTB provisions and didn't bother to look it up which was, apparently, a mistake. Clearly weak axis flat bar design in F11 is a valid subset of general, rectangular bar design in F11. Thanks for the clarification -- and for being tactful in setting me straight.
