Flood Wave Routing

I am routing a floodwave from a dam breach down a steep narrow canyon which spills out to a sorta flat floodplain for a different river.

I would like to know if there are some references for simple checks to expected flow depths for a wave exiting a canyon.

I am running a 1D model split in HEC-RAS because (for me)it is just about impossible to get useful unsteady flow for steep mountian canyons. I am also a running a separate 2D model just for the flow out to the floodplain. However, with all of the alterations I have to make to stabilize my models I would like a little more confidence in the results.
