My Friends,

I am working on the operations side of a new plant. The project team proposes to put steam flow meters on every steam tank heater as part of a TC-FC cascade. These are mixed tanks. The steam is to prevent freezing of the product, ranginging from 150F to 220F. The steam flow to the heating coild is 2" pipe in all cases. I am wondering if TC output directly to the control valve is sufficient.

I want meters elsewhere, but the project is on the ropes for cost. These tank steam flow meters seem possibly unneccessary. The temperature does not need to be that tightly controlled, +/-5F is ok. Disturbances on the steam and condensate side are possible, but the steam pressure should have good control.

Are steam flow meters neccessary in this service. We can save the project maybe 40 of these total if individual tank steam flow is unneccesary.

Any advice is appreciated.

Sounds like a simple TC loop would work just fine. That's how we do it on some surfactant tanks.

Good luck,

Technically, the glass is always full - 1/2 air and 1/2 water.

Thanks. My experience also suggests that a simple TC will be good enough.

best wishes,
