flow switch question

the set up is

1. manifold with two existing risers on it.

2. a supply riser is being added to the manifold, so it is teed off the manifold and not another riser.

3. shut off valve at tee

4. the riser is going to run WET through the building overhead and drop into a room to supply a dry pipe valve.

I want a flow switch after the tee in the manifold. Because if the pipe breaks in the middle of the night with out the flow switch no one will know till they find the swimming pool the next day.


Any section of 13 or maybe 24 that can require the flow switch besides the "I want it section"??

You might have false alarm issues (due to water supply fluctuations) unless you install a check valve after the control valve and prior to the flow switch.

I am not aware of any NFPA requirement, but NFPA standards are minimum guidelines..........sounds like you might have a valid reason for an additional water flow switch if the feed main is significant in length. I like the fact that you are thinking outside of NFPA standards and considering potential scenarios for an arrangement wich is really not covered by NFPA 13. Based on your comments, you should probably include the additional flow switch.

Important note: You still need to provide the low air pressure switch and water flow pressure switch at the dry pipe valve.

Completely separate thought: If the facility in question has a fire pump which has a pump running alarm, the fire pump would activate and the pump running alarm would create a prompt response in the scenario you describe.

Have not looked at 24 but thought there use to be something in there about a supply pipe say running nonburied through a crawl space requireing flow switch.

I know I can get the switch in this case, and know nfpa does not cover everything.
