fold formation in a sphere

Does anyone know how to introduce initial periodic defects to trigger folds?
Spheres under compression normally respond in folded dents. I want to simulate 4- and 5-fold formations under a compressive impact in a sphere with 1 mm thickness.

Instead of using defects could you use symmetry planes to force either the 4 or 5 fold geometry? I hope this helps.
