Thanks for the link... getting good LiDAR info with vegetation is quite complicated; this looked like they had improved the method so it provided a workable solution.
It's unclear; getting laser coherence over range in the real world is non trivial. Moreover, it's not something that can be readily done at the single photon level, which is actually the bigger limitation. Jigsaw was scaleable to getting only 10 photons per range return, using photon-counting avalanche photodiodes (APDs). Military systems can't afford to dump joules of laser energy in a realistic, tactical system.
