Hi

Can I operate a 660VAC,50Hz, 37Kw foot mounted -CT motor with a VFD ?
Are these any special motors in terms of their construction, protection etc ?

Regards

As long as the windings are "VFD-hardened" and you take precautions to avoid EDM in bearings.

Unusual spec, 660 is 690 these days. At least in EU. So, this may be a pre-1995 motor.

Then it may not be able to work (for years) with a VFD. Better talk to the manufacturer about that. We do not have all the facts.

A picture of the name-plate could help.

Half full - Half empty? I don't mind. It's what in it that counts.

VFD duty motors need VFD duty stator windings and an independent fan for cooling since shaft mounted fans are useless at lower speeds. Does CT motor mean Cooling Tower Fan motor?

CT = Constant Torque maybe?

I agree with the others, we don’t know enough about that motor and the real people to ask regarding inverter operation is the motor mfr.

Or, you could invest in what’s called a “sine wave filter” to go on the output side of the VFD, then add “shaft grounding bushings” to the motor as well as a separately powered cooling fan, that way even if it is not meant for VFD operations it will survive longer. You may find though that all of those measures will end up exceeding the cost of just replacing the motor with one designed for inverter operation.

Hello

Thanks everyone for your input.

As regards the motor, it is available with the manufacturer. This requirement is for Russia.But do agree that it is too much hassle and cost, instead would make more sense to purchase a VFD driven motor. I hope VFD motors for my spec do get manufactured.
