We currently produce a machined wrought connecting bar that is composed of 1045 Cold Rolled Steel, this material has a YS of 85ksi and a UTS if 115ksi.

We are exploring forging this piece but are concerned about using 1045 Cold Rolled bar. As the heating to 2300°F due to forging may effect the strength properties. Are our concerns warranted?

The forging shop may normalize after.

Heating is not the issue--2300F is within the norm for heating 1045 for forging. Your end strength for this part will be determined by the cooling rate after forging. You will need to do some tensile testing of pieces with various cooling rates as well as pieces normalized after forging and compare with the base line strength for the 1045 cold drawn bar.

After forging why not re-heat treat to achieve the desired strength properties? Heat treatment after hot working (forging) is routinely done.
