Forgot archaic bolt term. Need help.

I am having a senior moment and can't remember the term for purposefully damaging bolt threads after installation to prevent the nut from backing off. I had an old detail that used to say damage the threads with a cold chisel until a drafter found that there was a specific word for that. Anyone remember?

I have seen peen, upset, mar, stake, and deform all used on past drawings.

Usually what I have seen people use mar, upset, peen; as terms to damage the threads so that a nut cannot be lost.
But if you want to lock it in place Then you need to make that clear. Two slightly different functions.

Staking would also describe deforming the nut to create interference with the bolt thread. For example, center punching the nut face near the thread interface to deform the nut material into the bolt thread.

While this is not what the OP asked for, can I suggest the use of castle nuts? Same principle, but better and more reliable (or much less user dependent). Just needs drilling in situ for a cotter pin.

We use the terms deform or peen if referring to the bolt threads. As hydtools said, staking typically refers to deforming the nut, which is difficult to accomplish except with a slotted bolt and a stake nut.

I think that I will stick with 'upset the threads' for now. It has a poetic aspect to it like a murder of crows.

What would be the term for a large congregation of trolls?

The term " Distressing" the threads has also been used in some quarters. The German aircraft manufacturers were infamous for using plain nuts and belting the protruding threads with a hammer. until not too recently.
It made it extremely difficult to dis-assemble some of their stuff.

I've always used "foul threads"

I would not recommend "strip threads", as this would cause the nut to just slide right off.
