I am designing a lifting system similar to a four post hydraulic press. Is there a design "rule of thumb" for the bushing that ride on the post. I am worried about any side loading causing a moment that may bind the platten.

In general, to prevent a bushing from cocking on its shaft, use L/D > friction coeffient where L = length of bushing and D = ID of bushing.
