What is the difference between free vent, pressure vent & conservation vent? How to size a free vent?

1. A free vent on a storage tank (which you don't even mention, but I'm forced to assume) is nothing more than a piece of pipe or conduit that freely connects the tank vapor space with the open atmosphere. Sometimes a slight water seal is incorporated by designing the pipe as a "goose neck". Or the pipe is designed with a vertical 180 degree return (inverted "U") in ordered to keep rain water out.

2. A pressure vent (PV) and a conservation vent (CV) are usually the same thing, except that a CV might be built with a vacuum breaker as well as a pressure relief feature. The PV can also be built as a simplistic emergency relief device by simply using a weighed, flat, blind flange on top of a roof manway.

3. You size these devices the same way you size any vapor or gaseous conduit: you must preserve the integrity of the tank you are protecting so you must not allow the friction or flow resistance offered by these devices to raise the tank's internal pressure above its MAWP (maximum allowable working pressure) - or its MAWV (maximum allowable working vacuum).
