Hi,

Can anybody tell me what is Fugitive emission testing (FET test)? Why it is required & at what temp.? What is Production type & prototype FET testing? Which one is more stringent requirement production type test or prototype test?

Thanks in advance.

plu,
for the definition of "type" and "production" tests you may refer to EN 736 valve terminology standard, Part 3, for instance.

Some references about fugitive emissions TYPE testing may be:

- ISO 15848 std., Part 1
(see
- German "TA-Luft" Regulation (Technische Anleitung zur Reinhaltung der Luft) and VDI 2440 guideline, Annex Test method
(see and
- USA Clean Air Act and EPA "Method 21"
(see and
- Shell MESC SPE 77/300 specification

About fugitive emissions PRODUCTION testing, instead:

- ISO 15848 std., Part 2
(see
- Shell MESC SPE 77/312 specification

You may try to search the web, as well as within this Forum, using those keys. Maybe you can start from:

Hope this helps,

FET measures leaks from stem seal and body joints of a valve.

There are two types of testing as mentioned by NGL: prototype testing and production testing.

In order to perform the production testing on valves, a manufacturer shall have the certificate from the prototype testing and the valves subjected the production testing shall be within the qualification range of the prototype testing.

The pressure class rating and the temperature range are for you to decide based on the design temperature of the valve. There is not set guideline as long as you can demostrate that P/T conditions can be prepared for the test.

The standards NGL listed are all different from each other in terms of details. You have to read them all and design the test jig to perform each of them.

FYI, there will be a new API FET standard coming up so look out for it.

I hope this helps.

TOVmania,
if I may ask: when You mention "a new API FET standard coming up", do You refer to a new revision of the existing API 622 (applicable to stem packing only, as a single component to be tested on a special fixture)?
Or to a brand new standard with a new number, possibly applicable to complete valves?

Many Thanks in advance and Best Regards,
'NGL

FYI, 622 was meant for the packing manufacturer not for the valve manufacturer.

Yes, I know (and I agree)... but many Customers & Specifiers don't ;-P

Thx,

The new Standard will be to qualify a set valve range used in conjunction with API 622. We are working on multi-turns only currently and thus far looking to be a pass or fail standard. Hopefully this will set an industry standard to which both end-users and manufactures can agree to spec to. Lots of exciting stuff being worked on =)
