Hello valve gurus,

Do you think Full opening check valves are supposed to be installed horizontally too?

Clearance between body and disc is very small for these valves compared to regular swing check valve.

Any little intolerance at the hinge pin joint will cause the disc to drop a little on the body.

Any of you came across such problem before?

Thanks in advance

Tigeralum,
You are going to have to give us more information about this "Full Opening Check Valve".

Most of us are familiar with the following
- Swing Check Valves
- Wafer(Single and Double Disc) Check Valves
- Ball Check Valves
- Piston Check Valves (also called Lift Check Valves)

But I have no idea what you mean by "Full Opening Check Valve"

Full opening check valve is similar to a swing check valve, but can open all the way through the bore diameter.

It is piggable.

Even API 6D spec mentions this valve.

To dd to my previous post, I think the reason our customer wants to install horizontally is because that way it easier to run a pig as the weight of the disc wouldn't play a major role.

I want to clarify that by horizontally, I mean clapper in a horizontal position.

I still do not fully understand the question. When you say the clapper in the horizontal position, do you mean the inlet and outlet of the check valves point, per say, directly up and down? If so, which way is the system flowing? And is the said checkvalve assisted mechanically in any way? Linkage, spring, etc? Also,

What does you supplier say about horizontal assembly of his valves ?
In my experience, swing check can be assembled in horizontal, preferrably spring assisted to check.
Ciao,

Your question could be put two ways:

1. Can I find a piggable, full opening check valve on the market, type swing check, to be mounted in a vertical pipeline, flow direction vertical upwards, stopping downward flow (where fluid is drinking water??? wastewater??? or other fluid???? etc must be specified)

The answer is yes.

2. Same question as above, but given a specific brand, type and size/pressureclass you already have in mind.

The answer is probably but the specific valve has to be allowed for this use by the factory. This might involve restrictions on type of inner surface of the valve related to type of pig, and require spring or outside weight and arm to close the valve.

Valve orientation is something which, in first instance, the manufacturer has to bear in mind and confirm, and in second instance, the field engineers after reviewing the manufacturer's spec sheet. That goes for both the orientation as well as whether the valve is piggable or not.
