Future of secondary networks

Does anyone see networks becoming a thing of the past considering all their disadvantages, co-generation and more reliable materials today? Something would like Queens, Bronx or Manhattan would be easier to operate without them.

Having just gone through the process of moving two four feeder networks from an old substation at 11kV to a new substation at 13kV, I think they'll be around for quite some time. The DER question may be best solved by the inclusion of collector circuits in the system that go back to substation bus, or even better to a bus that isn't used for network feeders. But, time will tell.

We have a 208V grid network from back when downtown was low/midrise buildings, but a 208V network is not adequate to serve high rise buildings. Whether or not we eventually get rid of the grid network, it seems like we are stuck with it until a major of the buildings fed from the network otherwise undergo tenant improvement projects that a allow them to be moved to either radial circuits, an spot network, or an automatic transfer switch.
