Thanks for everyone's assistance in trying to figure out how to screen lines when plotting in AutoCAD 2002. I knew there was an easy way using the software and there was. It is as follows:
Go to Page Setup, then Plotter, Config, and then hit the properties button. When the dialog box comes up choose the "Custom Properties" button and then the options tab. On the screen that shows up make sure that the color is set to "Automatic." OK everything back to the Page Set up screen.
On the Page Setup screen, go down to the Plot Style Table (Pen Assignments). Presumably your .ctb file already has the percent screen set for the various pens you typically use to shade back features in your drawings. Now you need to modify your .ctb file so that the pens are all set to plot black.
Hit the Edit button and choose the Table View tab on the dialog box that appears. Select the Color box for pen No 1 and choose Black from the popdown box. This sets pen No 1 to plot black. Now highligh the color box for pen No. 1 and then right click on the "Color" button at the beginning of the pen color row. Choose "Apply to all styles" to change all 256 pen colors across the row to black. Hit "Save & Close" and then OK to exit page setup.
Assuming your plotter driver is operating correctly, that's all there is to it.
