I was asked to come up with a utility platform (similiar to the one I just uploaded) for a building with a gable roof. The pitch is 4"/12". I've been told that for all roofs with this type of pitch some sort of platform is required for safety. I suppose that way if anyone has to perform any work on the roof top units, they have a flat surface to stand on. My question is this something that is a pre-fabbed item? Or have others designed these themselves?

Our roof system is a metal deck supported by slopping joists.

Thank you in advance.

These are often designed by you to fit the actual need of the project. If you have guardrails or OSHA required fall protection tie-offs, this can be a little challenging. There are lots of ways to stub off the tops of joists, but you may need to add some bracing to the joists if this is an existing building.

These little tasks seem easy until you get into them. Lot's of details, plus roof penetrations that need to be leak sealed. Is there any way to delegate this to someone you don't like?

1) make sure the roof / framing can handle the added live and dead loads. the live load goes up 2x from standard roof live load. also watch for pileup of snow.

2) check out carbis. they and a couple of competitors have some standard systems you may be able to adapt.
