Hi,
I come across this term galvanic seperation is this reffered to optocoupler?
Thanks

It can be.

Galvanic isolation means you break the copper circuit thru any means you want to.

Transformers, Optocouplers, Fiber optics, Radio, Infra red, whatever.

Whenever the control circuit (input) is isolated from the controlled circuit (output), you have galvanic isolation. Like you have between coil and contact in a relay or between IR diode and photo transistor in an opto coupler. You can have any voltage difference, up to break-down voltage, between control circuit and contolled circuit.

A transistor, on the other hand, does not offer galvanic isolation between control circuit (base) and controlled circuit (collector). They share common paths and you cannot have any substantial voltage difference, especially not AC, between base and collector or emitter.

In contemporary American english I've seen this term commonly and exclusively used to refer to electrical isolation of dissimilar metals to prevent corrosion. An optocoupler could be used to accomplish this is some applications.

Compositepro;

It could mean that too! But in an electrical forum it means what we've all said.

Go over to a materials forum and they would probably assume it means isolation between dissimilar metals.

I do not know what world is bigger - the electrical or chemical. But in our world, the meaning is as said here. And this is an electrical kind of forum. Isn't it?

I fail to see the disconnect between the two meanings. Galvanic corrosion can be addressed by blocking the DC path formed by an electrical cell inadvertently formed by dissimilar metals exposed to an electrolyte. This is an electo-chemical process. The materials listed above can accomplish this. Buy a galvanic isolator for your boat, and it will contain components any EE should be able to appreciate.
