I don't normally have to deal with gas pipe sizing because i'm in the electrical trade but I hope you can help answer my question. I am installing a new power vented water heater in my home in a new location, and want to know if I can tap off the 1" line feeding the furnace to feed the water heater as well. The furnace has a 75,000 BTU input and the water heater has a 65,000 BTU input. Of course the chances that the furnace and water heater will be running at the same time a very remote but I wanted to make sure the volume of gas will be sufice.

Is there a plumbers and gas fitters website that gives good info on these topics?

If the gas line to your furnace is a 1" steel line and only 75,000BTUH is the rating of your furnace taping off of this line for a water heater should be no problem.
