gas turbine system electrition 3

Help. My son has signed up with the Navy as a gas turbine system electrition and it was not explained what this means, nor what he will be doing. I was wondering if anyone here could fill us in with any helpful information. ?

I was not in this job, so I don't know for certain--it appears that this job is to keep the complicated electronics that run gas turbines. There are gas turbines (sometimes people call these 'jet engines') that power ships, and there are gas turbines that power jet airplanes and helicopters. It is not clear to me from this description at navyjobs.htm if this job is for jet engines in airplanes or helicopters, or if it is for gas turbines that power ships.

Following copied from the US Navy web site.

"Gas Turbine System Technician (GS): GSs operate, repair and maintain gas turbine engines; main propulsion machinery, including gears; shafting and controllable pitch propellers; assigned auxiliary equipment propulsion control systems; electrical and electronic circuitry up to the printed circuit module; and alarm and warning circuitry. They also perform administrative tasks related to gas turbine propulsion system operation and maintenance, (GSE: Electrical) (GSM: Mechanical) "

This would not be aircraft engines the people who work on them have a different designation.

that's what I thought, however, at the website I cited, there did not appear to be a title that matched what a 'jet engine electronics" technician does

I fail to see how posting a site that describes "gas turbine system electrician", which we have seen defined several places already, answers my question of "what is a jet engine technician" called.

"Aviation Machinist's Mate (AD): Usually, ADs are assigned to billets concerned with maintaining turbo-jet aircraft engines and associated equipment or to any one of several types of aircraft maintenance activities. ADs maintain, service, adjust and replace aircraft engines and accessories, as well as perform the duties of flight engineers. "

and

"Aviation Electrician's Mate (AE): AEs maintain, adjust and repair aircraft electrical power generating and converting systems; lighting, control and indicating systems; and can install and maintain wiring and flight and engine instrument systems. "

and

"Aviation Electronics Technician (AT): Modern aircraft depend on radio, radar and other electronic devices for rapid communications, effective navigation, controlled landing approaches and neutralizing enemy equipment and tactics. ATs are responsible for the test, maintenance and repair of this equipment. "

I can't say that there aren't electronics associated with aircraft engines, but we tend to separate them for work load purposes. ADs work on aircraft engines. AEs and ATs work on aircraft electrical stuff.

Thanks. I would have never guessed "aviation machinist" was a jet engine technician. I would have guessed 'machinist' had something to do with making or repair (say grinding down something) engine parts.
