And always remember to check on the applicable specifications for the materials that you are considering to find out what the tolerance is. Standard products are rarely made to the nominal dimensions.

EdStainless brought up a very good point and one that has bit me several times. Just remember that sheet is not shim, shim is not feeler gauge stock, feeler gauge stock precision stock, and feeler is not foil.

As he states, check your tolerances and call out no more than you absolutely need and are available. Watch the ± numbers.
