I'm going to consider to take the GD&T certification examination. I would like to look at some materials about the examination coverage before I go in deep on it. Is there any self-study material for this examination out there. It will be great if it can be free. Thanks.

Somewhere like DraftingZone can be a useful resource. However you have to join to get full access.

Also Al Neuman has a website, maybe tec-ease or something, I can't recall.

The best book is the self study guide by Robert H. Nickolaisen. The ISBN is 0-7918-0188-8. I found a copy in a nearby University Library. This book, along with many classes, helped me get certified.

Do you mean the ASME certification? If so, there is a body of knowledge that the test is given from. Depending on your answer, I definitely have some advice about what you should be studying.

Yes, I'm going to apply the ASME GD&T (Y14.5 Standard) certification examination. It is much appreciated if any free material can help on this examination.

I highly recommend finding a way to get your hands on ASME Y14.5.2-2000. It's the body of knowledge that the test is given from. You can learn all the practical application about GD&T that you want but the test just touches on those things, what they really want to know are things like if you know where the datum leader attaches to the Feature Control Frame or whether you know if leading zeros are used on a print that is in inches. I've ranted about that test on these threads before and I think that now that 18 months have passed since I failed the test with a 73, I'm starting to get over it and I may give ASME $360 of my hard earned dollars again here in the next few months. I think the test is designed to generate a high initial failure rate so that they can collect the fee twice. Oh wait, they were gracious enough to discount the re-take if I took it again within a year.
Remember that knowing GD&T functionality is not going to be enough to get a passing score. You need to know the stuff that seems insignificant at the outset.

Powerhound is correct.

The questions on the test are multiple choice and are kind of tricky. There are no questions about measuring, only on application and meaning in a theoretical way.

Is circular runout the radial difference between two cylindrical diameters or circular diameters? mmmmmm Maybe it is the diametrical difference instead of radial difference. This is the type of question you are asked but one will have 4 choices.

Once one is finished the exam - brain dead. Hope you can find your way home and know your name and the failure rate is extremely high.

I studied for 2 weeks steady with a combination of standard and outline and I did fail the first time.

The book I mentioned above gives the location (linking)within the ASME Y14.5 standard that the Y14.5.2 standard shows the certification test is about. It links individual items in the Y14.5.2 to Y14.5. There are pre-tests that show you where you need more concentration. One thing to remember is that the certification test is based on the standard, nothing else. The test is four hours long and I passed it the first time around. Studied with the Nickolaisen book for a year after taking a class on how to pass the test. Spent about 3 hours a week studying & reading the standard. Scored much higher than I thought I would.
