Hello All,

We have recently been purchasing the 800 series feeder protection relays (850) and transformer differential relays (845) per our customer specifications on some substation jobs. These relays have to be ordered with different firmware packages based on the relaying options that is required. For example, synchronism check is not part of the base relay and has to be ordered with the sync check (25) option. When up loading the new firmware, it doesn't seem to "stick" and needs to be rebooted several times.

We have also had problems with the pushbutton functionality intermittently working. This also required a reboot of the relay. Since the Pushbutton function is written to logic, and the logic essentially stopped working and the relay had to be rebooted...........does this mean the actual protective functions would have also not worked?

Has anybody had any experience with these relays? If so, have you had similar issues?

I have not worked with the GE/Multilin 800 series relays, but have experienced similar odd behavior from another vendors product line (feeder and generator protection units). I would contact GE/Multilin and see what they have to say. As this appears to be the latest offering, there may still be some bugs to be worked out. If nothing else, a great reason to always have a relay retested after a firmware upgrade.
