Hello,

I'm a technical translator from Germany and urgently looking for a particular term:

It describes a kind of case/protection around the gearbox which reduces noise emission.

The German term is "Getriebekapselung" ("getriebe" = gear, kapselung = "protection/case/capsule?"

Is there a corresponding English term?

Thanks you very much in advance.

"gearcase" is the actual housing in which the gears, bearings, shafts and lubricant is contained within. It is not specific to reduction of noise, but would also perform that function.

"blanket" or "insulation" or "housing" would be some general terms used to describe flexible or rigid enclosures specific to the reduction of noise, but these would not be supportive to the bearings or shaft members.

Hopefully this may be of some help. Freundliche Grüße

It is better to have enough ideas for some of them to be wrong, than to be always right by having no ideas at all.

"Acoustic blanket" is what you are describing.

1gibson, thanks a lot. That's exactly what I've been looking for!

Thanks also to ornerynorsk. Your suggestions have also been very helpful.

There's obviously a lot I can learn here. :)

Optional terms might be: transmission blanket, or tranmission [noise] insulator - for a North American audience. For an international audience, substitute gearbox for transmission.
