gear reducer or belt and pulley

we have a project in converting the cement pump of a bulk carrier tank that was driven by the engine of the truck to make it stationary and be driven by an electric motor, the required rpm is 900-1000 maximum and our motor is 60 hz, 1800 rpm. can you give me a tip on what is the best to use gear reducer or belt and pulley?

I personally favor timing belts for ~2:1 ratios, but there are some things you have to check. You'll need spec sheets for the motor and the pump.

The belt tension is a 'radial load'. Because of the belt's nonzero width, it's also an 'overhung load'. Shaft and bearings of both driver and driven units must be rated sufficiently for both. The engineering section of a belt catalog will help with this stuff.

Large electric motors are sometimes not equipped for radial loads at all, unless you order the optional better bearings.

If you've never seen the pump driven by a belt, it may suffer from similar limitations. You have to check.

I prefer V belts for this type of application. If overloaded, they'll slip, like a free safety device. Timing belts are much more efficient, but not as forgiving when something jams.

hi i'm working on a home elevator. so the room & load weight is 800 pounds. i need to lift it 8 feets at 15 seconds rate. which electric motor horsepower and gear reducer ratio & type i need.
 
If you have to ask that question, you shouldn't be homebrewing an elevator.

Hire an engineer.
