i am connecting a small installation of 220 volts to a 2nd hand 8Kw Cat generator(Lister engine).Generator is only form of supply (6 hours weekly). The installation is about 25 metres from generator and is protected by 30 m/a RCD and earth electrode at installation.Under test the RCD does not trip. The generator connection box has 4 sets of terminals ---v6(linked).w2,v5---w6,v1(not linked).w5---u6(linked) .v2,u5,u2---w1(linked).i have connected to v6 and w5,u6 .
The generator might have a floating earth as it was connected as a standby previously. Should i bond neutral and earth at the generator.Should i install a separate earth electrode for generator.

Buletin board with lots of helpful folks who may be able to help you with the old set.

I have some questions about your situation.

What is a RCD? an earth fault device? How did you test it? Does it have a self-test circuit?

You list 11 wires on your generator, but there should be 12 I believe, where is U1 and which wires are connected together. Cannot understand the notation in your posting about which wires are connected.

How is the "220" to be obtained from the set? Line to neutral connection or Line to line? Does it deliver the correct voltage as connected?
