Hello,
Is there anyway of calculating what the maximum short circuit current that a generator is capable of handling without damage?

Any major power equipment including transformer, generator, etc, have a withstand characteristic sometime called thermal damage curve.

As notice below, this curve is a function of time. The equipment can withstand without damage more short circuit or for short and reduced approximately exponentially as the time increases.

“The typical thermal damage characteristic shown in below is drawn in accordance with the NEMA MG1 standard. This illustrates that fault currents of approximately 300% must be cleared within about 3 seconds.”
