Getting into Mininig Engineering

Hi, I'm currently a civil engineer and I am looking for work in mining (coal). I admittedly know very little about the duties of a mining engineer. Could anyone give me some information or point me in the direction of information on the job functions of a mininig engineer, spcecifically job functions at a strip mine? Also, in the coal mining engineer community, how appealing is a job at a strip mine compared to a position at an underground mine? Thanks in advance for any help.
