Is there anyone out there familiar with the chemical mechanisms of the surface corrosion of soda lime flat glass?

Soda lime glass is actually slightly soluable in water. Strong caustic conditions will increase solubility. Dissolving is fairly slow so it is usually not noticed except in cases like fiberglass or in loss of surface polish. Corrosion of aluminum can create caustic and concrete is caustic.

Stress corrosion also occurs if stress and strong caustic conditions occur. High temperatures accelerate both corrosion and stress corrosion.
