glass lens to metal base

I make environmental sensors. I need to hermetically seal a glass (BK7) lens to a small metal base. Base can be aluminum, stainless etc. Lens looks like a bowler hat, 1/4 inch in diameter, and I would make the seal on the outer edge. We have a complete smt facility so I can screen and reflow if using a solder paste. Would be very convenient if we could pop it into the reflow machine - ie temps similar to standard lead solder. I will be doing about 40,000 pieces a year, so I need something practical.

Sounds doable. Usually, a deposited metal ring on the lens is needed for good adhesion. Cyrocooled infrared detectors are packaged in metal Dewars with silicon or germanium windows that are solder-sealed.

Thanks IRstuff. When you say "ring", are you suggesting a third part, a small metal oring, if you will, that would drop over the solder joint to help bind it? We can do it if necessary.

No, I mean deposited, as in evaporated or sputtered onto the glass.
