GLASS SEPARTATION

I have a project that is a tenant finish out. The building is fully sprinklered with a portion already having a tenant in it. The existing tenant is a doctor's office/outpatient clinic. The space that we are finishing out is going to be the same occupancy. They are going to put a glass "wall" separating the two areas. The project engineer has called out for heads to be spaced on both sides of the wall no more than 12" from face of glass and no more than 6' on centers. I cant find in the code where this is required. Anyone help me out?

Have you asked the engineer for code reference ??

Is the engineer trying to get a fire rated separation by doing this??

Do not think you will find it
Maybe the old atrium protection, not sure if it is still there

Did the engineer also specify which head to use???

It is still in the building code, but under atrium provisions


Exception: A fire barrier is not required where a glass wall forming a smoke partition is provided. The glass wall shall comply with all of the following:

1. Automatic sprinklers are provided along both sides of the separation wall and doors, or on the room side only if there is not a walkway on the atrium side. The sprinklers shall be located between 4 inches and 12 inches (102 mm and 305 mm) away from the glass and at intervals along the glass not greater than 6 feet (1829 mm). The sprinkler system shall be designed so that the entire surface of the glass is wet upon activation of the sprinkler system without obstruction;

Be careful with this. If the sprinklers are used as an alternate to providing fire-resistive separation you need to use a listed design with listed glazing sprinklers.

Thank you for your responses. The problem I see is its not an atrium. Its just a glass wall separating two offices.

1. is it required to be a rated wall??

2. or, is the engineer trying to make it a rated wall?????

the design you were given is similar to protecting an atrium

I don't think it is required to be a rated wall. It may be option 2 cdafd. I am waiting on a call back from the contractor. Thank you for your responses
