I used a glass vessel for process development and now need to scale up for stainless steel vessel (still lab scale). Since heat transfer coefficient in glass vessel is different from steel, how do I size a new steel vessel to reach the same or better result?

When using a std laboratory mantle for heating it is never a concern switching for glass to metal with the proper temperature control. You might have a problem with strap on heaters if they are of marginal capacity.

You might Look at the Glas Col site as they make about any type of heating apparatus you will need.

Thanks for the quick reply, but that's not what I am looking for. I was looking for a quick way to calculate size of metal vessel. I think I should be able to find out the required size by using the overall heat transfer calculation which involves k = thermal conductivity of wall and A = area of heat transfer. It doesn't have to be the accurate sizing and just needs to be estimate.

Dear sweetfood,

Take care of this task because it is not as easy as it seems at first sight.

The right approach is by trying to keep (as much as possible) the same relations A/V (I mean, square feet/cubit feet) for heat transfer and P/V (Watts/cubic feet) for agitation in both reactors.

The U (Global Heat Transfer Coefficiente) includes a lot more data than you have mentioned in your post (the k aplies only to reactor wall, you need to calculate the convective heat transfer conditions and estimate the fouling factors - internal and external - to at least have a gross estimative of U) shoud be needed only if you want/need to change one of the equipmente conditions and, in this case, the material used to be the less important item to take into consideration. Unfortunnatelly in most cases it is necessary to increase industrial area to at least reach the minimun heat load for your new volume.

In this case, please sendo more data and I will try to show you the best way I can.

Reagards,

LCMS.

Dear LCMS,

Thanks for your input. I will just use the same dimension as glass vessel at this point.

You are welcome, Sweetfood.

Good Luck to you in your project.
