Global Variables

I think I am having a problem using global variables. I built an assembly of a box and I made the length a global variable in my assembly. In the part files for the sides, I establish the global variable and set one length in the sketch equal to that variable.
When I open the assembly and change the global variable, it does not update in the parts. I have to open or edit each side plus edit the sketch for it to update. This doesn't seem right. Is this the way it is supposed to work? The display of the variable in the feature trees of the assembly and the part files updates, but the part won't until the sketch is opened for edit. Control Q doesn't force anything. What's up with this?

Scott,

The sketch was not done in context. I established a variable in the part file equal to the global variable and set the sketch length equal to it. When I change the global variable in the assembly, its display in the assembly and in the part files in the feature tree update, but the parts do not. Just opening the part file or editing it in context and hitting update doesn't work, I have to edit the sketch. I don't have to do anything when in edit skletch except rebuild, the sketch opens with the length updated.
