I have a 380kva FG Wilson Generator run by a turbo charged Cummins Diesel. It is running under heavy load for ten day intervals. During this time I have noticed that the turbo and exhaust mainfold is glowing red hot. I have checked the temp and found it to be at 530 deg C. Can anyone offer any advice on the potential life span or any potential problems I might find with the turbo under these conditions.

Check with your local Cummins distributor, but you will likely find this is a normal operating condition at the provided rating. Unit is likely standby rated, you may want to assure you are running at the appropriate rating for your application.

Our Cummins NT14 (NT855) engine develops a nice glow on the turbo when it is working hard. The set is a full Cummins design. The local Cummins service guys have never commented on it other than "don't touch that!" as a warning after it has dropped below dull red in temperature.

If we learn from our mistakes I'm getting a great education!

Red hot is not a problem. I use to see yellow hot (that is about 1100 C) turbos on SAAB engines when running them in the test lab.

530 C is cool. No probs.

Yes, that is very normal. "don't touch that" is good advice.

Had a bad experience one time running-in a new 2M genset when a flexible oil line was left against the side of the turbo. Lube oil went everywhere and the turbo bearings were destroyed from lack of oil. Very lucky we didn't have a big fire.

Glowing red hot is normal. If the installation is indoor be sure to maintain safe distances to ceiling, ducts, pipes, etc... in the vicinity
