We use the “fix” when we run glycol system simulations. The Fix adjusts heat capacity, viscosity, thermal conductivity and density to match empirical data.
The Fix does not adjust latent heat, so when we size a PSV for fire in a vessel, we cannot be sure the relief rate is correct. Relief rate is basically the heat input divided by the latent heat. If the latent heat number is too low, we have a very conservative relief rate, which is safe but may result in unnecessary expense. If latent heat is too high we run the risk of using a relief rate that is too small, and hence the design is unsafe. The positive thing is we are confident the latent heat predicted by Peng Robinson equation of state is low, which means the designs are safe.
There are many property packages available to us through Hysys. Which one, if any, is best to use for glycol solutions?
I would like you to provide us with a solution to this problem. Again, the key questions are:
What is the best way to calculate latent heat for glycol solutions?
Is Hysys acceptable?
If yes, which property package within Hysys is best to use?
Is there any data available to tell us latent heats of glycol solutions? We would need this data for a variety of glycols; Ethylene Glycol (EG), Diethylene Glycol (DEG) and Triethylene Glycol (TEG). EG and TEG are most important.
