What is a "Shell File" and how is it used? They seem to have no data or geometry in them.

We do business with GM and I've never heard of such a thing. What kind of parts are you working with (wheels, brakes, engines, interior, etc.)?

I've heard of envelopes before...they're just outlines of other parts required for clearance checks, like a brake envelope or tire envelope in the case of aluminum wheel design.
