Hello guys,

Just a quick question on admissions into graduate programs for good (or 'famous') PE schools - CSM, TAMU, LSU, UT Austin, etc. Any ideas what are the kinds of qualifications professors are looking for when choosing students? I understand different schools may have different focuses and grade cut-offs, but just wondering if anyone had any experience or insight into the selection process?

I'm thinking of applying to a couple of schools for spring/fall 2016 - U of Houston, TAMU and possibly CSM (but they already rejected me once for their PhD program) - to do a Msc in research.

(Background - Beng (Hons) Mech Eng, 7 years of production/reservoir experience)

many thanks in advance

I sometimes think it is ability to pay, but having a clear idea of a (funded) research topic really helps. When I was applying to the MSME program at CU, I had a committment from my employeer to pay for my research for my thesis (and I had a project defined). I don't think that anyone on the committee ever considered not leting me in even though my undergrad was in Industrial Management.
