Hi, I am looking for a way to measure grain size inside and outside of the heat affected zone in a Ti6Al4V product. Can I use the comparison method provided in ASTM E112? If Yes, which reference plate should I use? While there are clear instructions for Stainless steels, copper, aluminum etc....I am not able to find instructions for Ti based alloys. There is something called "super strength alloys" in Table 1. Would this alloy qualify in this category?

If comparison method cannot be used, what other technique can be used for this application?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Interested as well, as I have seen large grain growth in welded Ti causing it to fail the bend test.

You could perform a Shepherd fracture grain size test.

Hi,
Have you electro etched this sample before? You can find some proper etchants from ASM volume 9 and then take some microscopic photos and measure the grains or sem it.
Cheers
