Hi all,
A friend of mine here at work just got upgraded to Windows XP and now UG NX2 is running like crap. He's on a Dell 650 with an FX 1000 Graphics card. The IT department added 2 gig of memory and now has a total of 3 gig. I'm thinking it's the graphics card and there’re saying no it's not. I was on the NVIDIA site and couldn't find the FX 1000 card even listed. Is there settings that need to be address in NX2 or XP that will make my colleagues computer run faster?

Thanks in advance!

P.S. Here's a thread that has been closed in this forum, but wanted to reference thread561-142980

Are you sure that it wasn't an FX 1100? That's the card I have in my system and it works fine, however, I do have the latest drivers.

One other thing that you should do and that is go to Preferences/Visualization Performance... and on the "General Settings" tab there is a large button labled "Evaluate Graphics Performance" (note that it's best to run this with only an empty part file open). Running this utility (it takes a minute or so to complete it's run) will identify the best NX settings and options to use to realize maximum graphics performance. Of course, prior to this, you need to make sure that you have the latest and greatest (and certified) graphics driver for this graphics card.

Thanks for another great tip John!

Still running slow John using "view"/"operation"/"section"/"body color".
It's a very large model, but it ran a lot better in Windows 2000 OS enviroment. I did check the graphics card, and it's a FX 1000 with the latest drivers installed. Do you think it's a upfront memory or a graphics card memory thing?

In the operation that you mentioned, View/Operation/Section if you don't use the Body Color option, is performance better? What about just "Specify Color"? Or "Off"?

You say the assembly is large. Can you define large, like in terms of the number of components?

Also, under Preferences/Visualization on the "Shade" tab, what is the "Shaded View" Tolerance set to?

John,
1) Yes, it runs a lot better with both, but the user
prefers it on base on it running pretty well in Win 2000.

2) The assembly has approx 1000 parts.

3) The shade tab is set to "standard"

I'm starting to think it's a XP OS or hardware issue. Another colleague here has his XP switched to "Classical" mode and he says it runs better.

That's an oft-forgotten tweak to help NX run better on XP. It cures quite a few little nags. I'd suggest switching this XP box to Classic mode as well.

That's only a 128mb card....it's going to be a tird with anything big loaded up.

If anyone experiences any problems with NX while running under Window XP display mode, you probably have not installed all of the proper MS patches. This was never an NX issue, it was a MicroSoft problem which has been addressed sometime ago. Please contact GTAC if you feel that you are still having issues with the Windows XP display mode.

BTW, as a side note, we have halted all testing of NX on Windows using anything other than the Windows XP display option. We do no testing under Windows Classic.

We had some similar issues when we upgraded to XP. Turns out that when IT installed XP they also changed the NX defaults. Pretty easy mistake since they reinstall all software when doing an OS upgrade. Anyway, once we changed our visualization performance setting back to where we had them everything seemed OK. We even did some benchmarking between Win200 and XP and could find no difference.

With that said there were still some users that swore XP was slower. Never could find anything amiss however.

One more thing, 1000 components? That's a huge assembly. I wonder if that could have more to do with your performance issue than the display. There are a number of ways to speed up performance when working with very large assemblies, depending on what you are trying to accomplish.

I've had a similar experience of a user complaining about graphics being slow.
That turned out to be as simple as him being in "Studio Mode" instead of the normal shading mode which carries a lot of overhead.
It's a quick thing that I had overlooked initialy as it used to be difficult to switch to this mode before the introduction of the radial popups.

FX1000?FX1100??I have not heard that before. Is it a professional card?

The Nvidia Quadro FX series is a mid-range performance workstation opengl graphics card. The Fx1000/Fx1100 were the original cards and have been replaced with the FX1300/FX1400/FX1500 cards.
