Grips

My question is when I pick a line or object and the blue grips appear, I'm usually able then to go to a command icon such as move and automatically i should be able to move the entity. But when I pick the entity (with the blue grips)then go to the command icon (such as the move Command) i have to re-pick the item.
How do i fix this problem, it's really aggravating?
Do i do something in preferences?
I'm using Acad 14
Any suggestions will be helpful

At the command line type "pickfirst"
this should be set to a value of 1

I forgot, you can also do this under tools/selection
check the noun/verb to turn it on.
both ways I mentioned do the same thing
