Gross vs net area for welded connection

Hi

Gross areas and net areas are the same for welded connection right. When checking block shear for welded connection, Anv=Agv and Agt=Ant?

Ok, something seems to be wrong with that picture? How could you possible get case 2 for the original connection. I would think case 1 would only apply because you are welding across the end of the connection. Now, if you were just welding the sides I could see either case being possible.
 
SteelPE, I agree. I think that's an error on the slide.
 
CASE II is for when there is NO transverse weld at the back/end, as SteelPE stated.
 
Coming from UK practice, I dont think I've ever considered case 2 in designing a similar weld group subject to shear only.

As SteelPe and Ingenuity say, I think it would only make sense when theres no transverse weld on the back.
