Grounding / Earthing Materials

Dear all

Could you please tell me the methods of earthing (i.e materials). I know about using Ground rods/pits for the same. I heard from some where about using Deep bed anode system which gives less resistance & one more system using some type of Chemicals.

What is your application? Power grid, building, communications lightning protection?
 
Deep well anodes are more typically associated with cathodic protection schemes for pipelines and other buried structures than for power system earthing.

See The last substation job I was on had very poor ground conductivity. The entire site was covered with about one meter of trucked in lower resistivity soil and a one hundred foot deep well was drilled at each corner of the site. The grounding electrodes were lowered into the wells and then Erico GEM was poured into the wells.

You can also try concrete encased ground rods. The concrete acts like a wick to hold moisture and keeps the ground resistance fairly stable. It's less expensive that the GEM material and seems to work as well. In other words, just substitute concrete for the GEM material in Bill's suggestion.
 
That brings back a memory. I was upgrading the instrumentation on a test cell located in Florida sand. The jet engine test stand was mounted on a lot of steel buried in concrete. This represented a superior ground compared to that of the buildings electrical system and resulted in large ground currents from one to the other.
