We have some aluminum disks that we would like to powder coat - but only one side of the disks. The outside firm we use for painting isn't sure how do to this. I was thinking a silicone rubber block with counter bores that the disks would press into. My question is grounding. Do I need a ground strap attached to each disk? Or is all I need a charge such that if the non-conducting silicone rubber block was placed on a grounded cart enough charge would accumulate on the disks to attract the powder?

A disk has 2 sides and an edge. Does the edge need to be free of paint as well? We have a similar part shape, and simply use tape to mask off the back side, but our edge gets painted. Our part is grounded by the hook going through a small hole in our disk.

I'd like to keep the paint off the edge but we might be able to live with some paint on it (small clearance between the disk od and the mating part ID). Your method sounds easy though. I'll suggest it to the painter.
