Grouping of service disconnects

As per design bus of existing service switchboard will be tapped before service disconnect switch.
Second service switch will be installed.
What could be the maximum distance from existing service switch to new switch (or could new service switch be placed in another room) in order to comply with NEC grouping rules?

Article 230 says the disconnects must be "grouped". This is not defined in the NEC AFAIK. So it will probably be up to interpretation by the local AHJ.

However, I cannot imagine any interpretation that would allow one of the six main disconnects to be in another room.

I would expect anything over a few feet and not in very plain sight and very close proximity would not be acceptable.

While you're going to the trouble of tapping the switchboard, you could just put in a single main breaker along with the new tap. Problem solved and a much better, safer installation in the process.
