Anyone know where I could find an official specification for this material? I can find plenty of unofficial chemistry tables, but I would like to have the actual original specification. I've found reference to DIN 1.6761, but I can't find this document either.

The chemistry is listed in my Stahlschlussel, but there is no spec listed.

Thanks Ed. Is there an explanation for this? I'm asking out of ignorance, but it seems some materials have standard chemistries, but no specification. For example, AISI 4130 - I cannot find a specification for this, but I have no doubt that the countless manufacturers of it are following the same chemistry ranges.

4130 is either UNS G41300 or J13048 depending on product form.
Then there are about 40 specs that cover the wrought material and 2 for the cast grade (J) listed in my UNS handbook.

What about forged round bars with MTRs that only specify AISI 4130? There must exist some sort of specification for AISI 4130, but I cannot find it. My dealings with AISI 4130 is through welding procedures and in that case, I typically specify UNS G41300 for the chemistry, but it bugs me that I don't have a specification for AISI 4130.

AISI 4130 means that they are working 60 years ago, it means nothing.
There has to be an ASTM, ASME, ISO, EN, DIN or some sort of product spec.
Otherwise, you have nothing.
No production method, not tolerances, no NDT, no CMTRs.

Thanks again Ed. That confirmed what I kind of thought was the case. I definitely see MTRs on a somewhat regular basis that only specify AISI 4130.

You must order to a product spec, it then becomes the legal basis for the order.
And make sure that own legal copies of any spec that you reference.

You should use the ASTM/SAE UNS book to look up the specifications that refer to UNS G41300 (i.e. 4130). You can then select the right one(s) that apply to your product form to determine requirements.

As for GS-18NiMoCr3-X, you should try the Worldwide Guide to Equivalent Irons and Steels (published by ASM). I often find this provides the keys to applicable standards, especially using these international designations.

bekks, your headline "GS-18NiMoCr3-X - Looking for cast steel specification" has absolutely relationship to all of the discussions subsequent regarding 4130 steel. The steel you were asking about is not at all a casting steel. Rather, it is mold steel that is used to make molds for castings, such as wrought tool steels. I think the "X" at the end of the designation is really a placeholder for a single digit - either "6" or "7". You will find ample documentation for these alloys when you Google it. Again, these mold steels are not 4130.

(BTW: from your description, you are looking at wrought, not cast, 4130 so UNS G41300 is the proper designation).

Thanks mrfailure.

I agree the discussion took a turn, which was my own doing. I realize that the 4130 discussion was not related to the GS-18NiMoCr3.

The GS-18NiMoCr3 is being used as a support structure and I'm fairly confident it is cast. My question was where I could find a specification (rather than manufacturers stating the chemistry and strength) for it. But I think the route we are going is to perform a chemistry and tensile and specify it by properties. My role in this is to develop a welding procedure.
