From an electrical perspective what guidlines, regulations and standards should be followed in UK industry, and any specific to industries with hazardous area zones.

Cheers

The two which spring immediately to mind are BS7671, aka the 17th Edition Wiring Regulations for LV installations, and ATEX / DSEAR. Some of the standards relating to hazardous areas are listed here: and the rest of BS EN 60079 is worth looking at too.

After that there are regulations relating to EMC, machinery construction, the Low Voltage Directive and the standards derived from it, earthing, HV installations, lighting, telecoms, lightning arrestors, etc, etc.

You might want to have a look at the BSI website and trawl through it. There are literally thousands of standards relating to electrical equipment in some form or other. I couldn't even begin to list them all here.
