Gunite Pool Repair

Client needs to replace a pipe within a gunite pool. He's concerned that during the removal of the existing pipe, mostly likely by chiseling, he's going cause damage to the surrounding gunite. Even though gunite is a cementitious material, I don't think that it will hold up similar like concrete would...

Are there certain repair techniques that need to be implemented to mitigate additional damage to the gunite shell?

Thanks.

Maybe use a smaller percussion chipping hammer like an electric 10-lb'er?

Gunite (pneumatically applied concrete = shotcrete) is usually pretty dense stuff if applied correctly, so the usual concrete repair 'rules' would apply, IMO.

I'd core a hole with a diamond bit core barrel. The annuylar space later can be caulked.

Agree with OG. Coring bit can be about the same size as the pipe O.D., thus minimal sealing issue and no damage to Gunite. Ingenuity is correct....Gunite is a proprietary form of shotcrete. Concrete repair methods, if necessary, apply.
