Guys,

I have an assembly open and I open a part of the assembly. I do a saveas for the part and use a different name. I expect the new name would be reflected in the feature manager of the assembly but it is not. It keeps the old name. There must be something in the options that is not set right. Anyone has any ideea?

Recommended for you

1.) double-check the component properties in the assembly to see if the file name changed but the component name did not. also, double check to make sure the part you open is the same file.

2.) make sure you do not have "Save as Copy" checked in your "Save As" dialog.

1. The file name did change but the component name did not.
It is the same file. I can change the component name manually.

2. I do not have Save as Copy checked

I have seen this happen since I went to SP5.0 for SW2003. The only way I could make it change in the feature tree was to open the file from the tree. When I returned to the assembly tree after opening the part, all was well. I think its a little bug, but annoying.

You need to check this option (if it's not already) in your Tools\Options\System Options\External References\ "Update Component Names when documents are changed"

With the assy and the part open at the same time...go to the part and 'save as' the part and give it a new name, you will get a message telling you it will update the part in the assy.

Scott,

The option in Tools\Options\System Options\External References\ is "Update Component Names when documents are replaced". Checking and unchecking that option doesn't make any difference.

automationbabe,

I think you are right, I noticed this started after I installed SP5.0. I agree with you, it's a bug and extremely annoying.

Scott,

try it in SW2003 SP5.0 and see if does the same for you.

This should work, but it looks like a bug in SW03 SP5.0. It works in SW04 SP1.0.

What you can do is this:

1) Open SW explorer and open the assembly in there.
2) Click on Edit\Rename document
3) Then click on the part you want to rename
4) Click Find now
5) Under To: put in the new name you want to use test.sldprt
6) Then click apply.
7) You will notice the assembly turns blue and the name update in the FM of SW explorer.
8) close file
9) Open SW and make sure that the option I told you to check above is turned on. Tools\Options\System Options\External References\ "Update Component Names when documents are changed"
10) Open the file and you should see the change

You should report this to your VAR as a bug, but I don't think you will get a fix for it since it does work in SW04 and I think SP5 is the last SP for SW03.

I hope that helps,
