As per our project requirement we place order for Hastelloy C276 Flanges to ASTM B462 UNS N10276 and ASME B16.5. However, we have received Hastelloy flange to ASTM B574 UNS N10276.

1) Can we accept this flange?

2) As far as I know ASTM B462 UNS N10276 covered in Materials Group 3.8 of ASME B16.5. But, I am not certian about the inclusion ASTM B574 UNS N10276 in group 3.8. PLease advise.

No, the B574 for UNS N10276 is not listed in B16.5. By the way, this specification is for rods of certain sizes.

Gafoorkti,
Most C276 flanges are made from SB-574 round bar. The major difference between the forging spec and the round bar spec is that B462 calls for the C276 forgings to be solution annealed.

The manufacturer needs to do the solution anneal, then do a chemical and physical analysis for each heat# and each heat treat batch. The parts need to be properly marked once finished.

If you have only a few pieces, send them back and ask for fittings that meet your PO requirements. If you have a large quantity and/or large diameter flanges: they're not scrap, they're just not finished.

Typical loop holes in current ASTM specifications.

Metengr,
I'm just offering a solution for making the parts acceptable for the project, rather than only looking for reasons to reject them.

TJOrlowski;
Understand completely. However, mechanical properties between rod, bar and forgings can be quite significant and will affect pressure/temperature ratings for fittings. Sometimes, rejection is necessary versus the effort in trying to shoehorn materials in certain applications. The same approach goes with equivalent materials.
